The homes of Tech Czars

All that makes tech billionaires have in common, of course other than their fat bank accounts are Larger-than-life Palatial Homes. Spread over hundreds of acres, these stunningly beautiful houses, eye-popping extras, stand as testimony to their owners' deep pockets.

Here's peeping into the houses of technology czars: homes with music-system fitted pools, lakes, five-level terraced lawns and also a legal battle to boasts of.

1. Bill Gates

The former chief architect of world's biggest software company Bill Gates lives in 66,000 square feet house built situated on the edge of lake Washington. The address is 1835 73rd Ave NE, Medina, WA 98039.

The house is famous for its design and the technology it incorporates. Nicknamed Xanadu 2.0, Gates reportedly purchased several pieces of land and houses and built this house adjoining all those. Much of the house is built underground into the hill, so the house looks smaller than it actually is.

The house built in the Pacific lodge style has many marvels including the 17-by-60-foot swimming pool has an underwater music system and a floor painted in a fossil motif. Swimmers can dive under a glass wall and emerge outdoors by a terrace.

Then there's ornate, paneled library with a domed reading room with oculus (light well), fireplace, and two secret pivoting bookcases, one containing a bar. It's the fitting home for Leonardo da Vinci's 16th-century notebook, the Codex Leicester, which Gates bought for $30.8 million.

The 20-seat art deco theater is outfitted with plush chairs, couches, and a popcorn machine. Towering Douglas fir beams support the stainless-steel roof and are surrounded by walls of glass, concrete, and stone. While much of the house is buried into the hillside, windows on the lakefront side provide views of Seattle to the west. There are 84 steps down from the entrance to the ground floor.

2. Larry Ellison, CEO, Oracle

The flamboyant chief executive officer of Oracle Corp has been in buzz for spending nearly $200 million on near a dozen properties in posh Malibu town of US.

Ellison's Japanese-style imperial villa includes a traditional tea house, bath house, gardens, several ponds and waterfalls. The house also has Japanese screens and two Japanese flooring rooms.

The house has a man-made 2.3-acre lake and with extensive seismic retrofit.

The exquisite 23-acre property is located in Woodside, California, one of the most expensive areas in the US.

3. Steve Jobs, CEO , Apple

Apple CEO Steve Jobs' 17,000 square feet 14-bedroom Jackling House in Woodside, California is reported to be worth $5.4 billion. The 30-room Spanish Colonial home dates back to 1926. The home was built for copper baron Daniel C Jackling, who revolutionised the refinement of copper and founded the Utah Copper Company. In 1984, Jobs purchased the mansion designed by George Washington Smith.

Jobs lived in this house for about 10 years. Jobs initially wanted to demolish the mansion; however, he lost his bid to demolish the Woodside mansion that preservationists call a historical treasure.

Jobs bought the house in 1984 but haven’t lived there for a decade, as he wanted to tear it down and build a new, smaller unit that would be more appropriate for his family. They now live in Palo Alto.

Preservationists cried foul and said the house should be protected. A group calling itself Uphold Our Heritage sued the city to stop the demolition.

4. Michael Dell, founder and CEO, Dell

The house of Michael Dell in Austin, Texas is said to be one of the largest house in the world, and one of the most expensive houses built in Texas.

Built in 1997, Dell's 33,000-square-foot mansion is set on a 20-acre spread; a stone's throw from Dell's headquarter. It is known locally as `the castle', courtesy its high walls and tight security.

The house has 8 bedrooms and bathrooms, 13 half baths, a conference room, an exercise room, an indoor pool and outdoor pool, cabanas, a five-level terraced lawn and a stunning view of lake Austin.

Dell's mansion reportedly became a bone of contention between Dell and city appraisers, who assessed the value at $22.5 million. This left Michael Dell with a property tax bill of more than a $500,000. The dispute was finally settled for $12 million.

5. Paul Allen, co-founder , Microsoft

Co-founder of world's largest software company Microsoft, Paul Allen has one of the largest privately-owned super yachts in the world called Octopus. Wondering what is it doing in the tech titans' home list? Allen's Yatch is as good as a home. Read on to find out.

The mega yacht is said to have cost Paul Allen over $200 million. Octopus has a full-time crew of 60, including former Navy Seals. Designed by the world's famous company Espen Oino Naval Architects, German shipbuilders LUrssen and HDW has made its exterior. The interior of the Octopus was designed by American designers Jonathan Quinn Barnett and Christian Grevstad from Seattle.

Allen's Octopus features two helipads on the top deck (one in front and one on the back, each with a helicopter), a sixty-three foot tender docked in the transom, seven boats, a pool on one of the upper decks, a basketball court, and two submarines: one a ground crawler operated by remote control for studying the bottom of the ocean and the other a 10-man vessel with the capacity to sleep eight for up to two weeks underwater. Side hatches at the water line form a dock for jet skis.

In 2003, when Paul Allen got Octopus built, it was the world's largest yacht.

6. Master George Lucas, creator of Star Wars

George Lucas is the man credited of bringing technology to big screens. The creator of Star Wars series bought a land north of San Francisco in 1978 which he named Skywalker Ranch.

Ever since then the famous filmmaker has spiced up the space with new additions. Today, the place is headquarters of Lucas's business operations. The 4,700-acre land has a huge lake called Ewok and several kinds of animals and vineyards. There's a fruits and vegetable garden that also caters to the on-site restaurant. The fitness centre has racquetball courts and an outdoor swimming pool. There's also a hilltop observatory, a 300-seat theater called The Stag, multiple-theater screening rooms. The parking lot is mostly concealed underground to preserve the natural landscape.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "assembled parcel by parcel since September 1978, Skywalker Ranch has cost Lucas up to $100 million."

Robotic Trash collector - A real life Wall-E

A robot called DustCart isn't just a figment of anybody's imagination. The green-colored recycle bot is currently undergoing a test run in Peccioli, a small Italian town.

Peccioli is an ideal location for DustCart's testing because the town is wellknown for its high-tech dump sites that can both recycle and produce usable energy, thereby creating an economy that has something to do with garbage.

Part of a $3.9 million project called DustBot, DustCart will operate autonomously, responding to users' calls within its service area. As soon as DustCart reaches the caller, it will ask for a personal ID number, ask for the type of garbage they want to dispose of (organic, recyclable or waste) and then collect the trash placed in the bin inside its belly to be taken to a dumping site.

Such a scheme will reportedly work better in small towns like Peccioli than larger garbage trucks. Developers, scientists from the Robotics Department at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna University, also installed a sensor on DustCart that monitors air pollutants in real time. In the future, that particular function could be used to feed data to networks that monitor air pollution.

Noise pollution is also addressed and curbed by using a lithium-battery operated engine to run the robot and avoid the ruckus made by other vehicles. In spite of the ongoing test run, it's still unclear whether DustCart will be put to actual use anytime soon.

The rise of e-Currency - Good or Bad?

Those who are playing most popular MMRPG (Massively Multiplayer Role Plyaing Game) like Mafia Wars on Facebook or newly launched 140 Mafia on Twitter might be very well aware of the E-Currency or Virtual Cash.

They use Virtual Cash to buy properties like Islands, Restaurants, Weapons, Sedans, Armors. At the same time they also earn that Virtual Cash by finishing specific tasks.

Web sites such as PlayerAuctions have even adopted a PayPal-like approach in order to broker the trading legally the virtual assests including virtual Gold and acting as an open marketplace for players to exchange their digital assets.

Frenzoo, a "3D fashion game for girls"has adopted this Virtual e-Currency model. Other popular games like World of Warcraft, EverQuest and Second Life also has their own Market Place and simialr models where players are using them for Real Cash.

In March 2009, GoldMoney launched a dedicated iPhone application allowing its account holders to exchange gold and silver units within minutes.

The big question is, whether these kind of models allowing e-Currency and Virtual Cash transactions are good or bad?

The increasing use of these virtual currencies and virtual money by players and internet users leading towards a new Dual Economy is really a matter to concern and take seriously. The Gaming Companies are surely earning Big Time Profits with these kind of Models but the question is how useful it can be made into the routine economy and routine transaction.

If you have your say on the Virtual Economy, comment it.

Worst U.S. cities for IT professionals

The United States (U.S.) is the home of opprotunities and the biggest hub of Information Technology (IT) and Software Industry. However, not all the cities of the U.S. are frenzy for IT and Software pros especially in this recession period.

Network World, a leading IT and Research Company, has come out with a list of US cities that IT pros probably should avoid. Here's Network World's list of least favorite US technology job locales.

1. Detroit
Topping the list is Detroit. According to Network World, Detroit, the Mecca of automobile companies, can hardly be any IT professional's destination of choice right now. With auto companies and their suppliers struggling to survive bankruptcy and global recession reason is not hard to find.

Detroit was also a part of the Forbe's top 10 'Fastest Dying US Cities' list.

2. Bentonville
The second city on the list is US retail giant's headquarter Bentonville.

3. Cleveland
The city of Rock and Roll fame Cleveland is next on the list. The city has witnessed one of the highest foreclosure rates in the US, huge population declines and dying industries of yesteryear, according to the article.

Like Detroit, Cleveland too was a part of the Forbes top 10 'Fastest Dying US Cities' listing.

4. Syracuse
Next on the `worst' US city for IT pros list is Syracuse. The city holds the title for the US city with the highest average annual snowfall (115 inches), more than Anchorage, Alaska (114 inches). The city reportedly also has a bit of a problem with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) due to heavy snow and little sunshine.

5. San Francisco
Here's the city whose entry in the list is sure to raise eyebrows. According to Network World, "These havens for IT geeks and tech companies both offer insanely high real estate prices, suicide-inducing traffic and too many cocky and annoying IT people fighting over precious jobs."

San Francisco also claims the No. 1 spot for worst cities for identify theft, or `iJacking.' And Boston is said to be too full of itself.

6. Anchorage
Anchorage is the next city on the list. The city receives second-highest snowfall in the US.

7. Orlando
Orlando is surely a tourist haven with its theme parks. But the city is surely not a haven for techies. The Network World's authour blames the Orlando's real estate mess and the annual hurricane season for this not-so-favourable title

Software Codes that worth Millions

Source (Reuters)

In the world of automated trading, fortunes are made in less than the blink of an eye.

That wealth is generated on computer systems that can handle greater trading volumes at ever increasing speeds. These platforms often rely on algorithms -- a sequence of instructions used for calculation and data processing -- that can spot unseen opportunities in the market and give their users a huge advantage measured in milliseconds.

For banks such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N), the codes are worth a fortune and this value also make them a tempting target for thieves -- as appears to have happened with Sergey Aleynikov, a former computer programer at Goldman arrested by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation last Friday.

"The risks of trying to steal a trading model are very high," said David Easthope, a senior analyst at Celent, which is part of the Oliver Wyman Group. "But the potential reward is very, very high because when you look at investment banks, they've made higher and higher profits" from automated trading.

Goldman in particular has had a "great last few months" thanks to a trading model that has enabled it to "take the right risk at the right time," Easthope added.

GET THAT EDGE

"If you happen to have built a model that makes you even 200 milliseconds faster than me, you are in a much better position," said Sang Lee, managing director of research and advisory firm Aite Group. "You may be able to trade a thousand times before I even see what's going on and act on it."

It takes 300 to 400 milliseconds for human eyes to blink and it's that advantage that encourages thievery, such as allegedly committed by Aleynikov.

"These systems have a huge value and, if they get out, then you lose your edge," said Michael Gorham, director of the center for financial markets at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

The Goldman Sachs case is unusual because it is far more common for algorithm experts to design a system, walk away with the information in their head and build an identical system elsewhere -- which can lead to civil lawsuits over intellectual property rights, but not charges of theft.

"But you don't often hear of people actually stealing the data in question," Gorham added.

Analysts say increased financial regulation and oversight proposed by the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama -- the largest regulatory overhaul since the Great Depression if it makes it through the Congress -- cannot prevent data theft of this kind.

Instead, the hedge funds, internal trading desks at banks and independent proprietary trading firms that use trading platforms are expected to beef up internal security to try to minimize the risk.

Full Oldest Bible goes online

 Source: Reuters
The surviving parts of the world's oldest Bible were reunited online Monday, generating excitement among scholars striving to unlock its mysteries.
The Codex Sinaiticus was hand-written by four scribes in Greek on animal hide, known as vellum, in the mid-fourth century around the time of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great who embraced Christianity.

Not all of it has withstood the ravages of time, but the pages that have include the whole of the New Testament and the earliest surviving copy of the Gospels written at different times after Christ's death by the four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The Bible's remaining 800 pages and fragments -- it was originally some 1,400 pages long -- also contain half of a copy of the Old Testament. The other half has been lost.

"The Codex Sinaiticus is one of the world's greatest written treasures," said Scot McKendrick, head of Western manuscripts at the British Library.

"This 1,600-year-old manuscript offers a window into the development of early Christianity and first-hand evidence of how the text of the Bible was transmitted from generation to generation," he said.

The texts include numerous revisions, additions and corrections made during its evolution down through the ages.

"The Codex ...is arguably the oldest large bound book to have survived," said McKendrick, pointing out that each page is 16 inches tall by 14 inches wide.

"Critically, it marks the definite triumph of bound codices over (papyrus) scrolls -- a key watershed in how the Christian Bible was regarded as a sacred text," he said.

Sony to introduce Netbook Vaio

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp said on Tuesday it plans to launch a new Vaio laptop that will sell for around 60,000 yen ($629) in Japan in August, making an entry into the fast-growing netbook market.

Netbook PCs are smaller and cheaper than traditional notebook computers and optimised for simpler computing tasks such as Web browsing and email.

Pioneered by Taiwan's Asustek in 2007, other global brands such as Acer Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc have pushed out their own lines since then.

Sony, the last major PC maker to enter the netbook segment, hopes the new product's design and high-resolution display will help the consumer electronics giant establish a presence in the market, a company spokeswoman said.

The new Sony machine, equipped with Microsoft Corp's Windows XP operating system and Intel Corp's Atom processor, will have an LCD display with a resolution of 1,366-by-768 pixels, compared with the 1,024-by-600-pixel displays that are widely used in other netbooks.

Sony declined to unveil its sales target for the new netbook model, but the company aims to boost its overall Vaio PC sales to 6.2 million units in the year to March 2010 from 5.8 million units a year earlier.

Global netbook PC shipments in 2009 are likely to more than double from a year earlier to 26.4 million units, according to research firm IDC.

Sony shares closed down 2.3 percent at 2,355 yen, underperforming the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index, which fell 1.2 percent.

Dell launches digital forensics service for police

Dell launches digital forensics service for police
Tue Jul 7, 2009 6:03am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Dell Inc, the world's second-biggest maker of personal computers, launched a package of hardware, software and services on Tuesday designed to help police convict more criminals as digital evidence proliferates.

The company said its digital-forensics package would help police reduce backlogs that can be as long as two years as it would allow multiple analysts to work simultaneously on the same data while preserving an audit trail of evidence-handling.

The package, launched with partners including Intel, gives customers tools to build and host their own datacentre, meaning they can have the convenience of so-called cloud computing while keeping control of it themselves.

James Quarles, Dell's head of public-sector marketing in Europe, told Reuters that customers remotely accessing criminal evidence in parallel from such datacenters could gain a crucial time advantage, for example when legally constrained as to how long they could hold terrorism suspects without evidence.

Dell reorganized its operations at the end of last year to group them around customer segments, one of which was the public sector, instead of around geographical regions, and said on Tuesday this had helped its new digital-forensics push.

Josh Claman, head of Dell's European public-sector business, said in a blog the new product "embodies everything we wanted to achieve when we decided to restructure the way Public Sector customers' needs are addressed." (en.community.dell.com/blogs)

Dell made about $15 billion in sales to the public sector last year, including hospitals, government, education and defense -- about a quarter of its total revenue.

The company cited estimates by research firm IDC that the U.S. digital-forensics market would be worth $630 million this year, up from $252 million in 2004, while the international market would be worth $1.8 billion by 2011.

Apart from chipmaker Intel, partners in Dell's offering include data-storage gear maker EMC Corp, business-software maker Oracle Corp, security-software maker Symantec Corp and privately held digital-forensics specialist AccessData.

Dell will present the new service to Britain's Association of Chief Police Officers on Tuesday.

Satyam Computers regaining Customers faith after biggest scam

Satyam Computer Services Ltd, the company at the center of India’s biggest corporate fraud probe, is regaining customers after its takeover by Tech Mahindra Ltd, Chief Executive Officer Chander Prakash Gurnani said.

“The company is now focused on growth,” Gurnani said. “Overall, the feedback from the customers is excellent.” The former head of international operations at Tech Mahindra was appointed at Satyam by the Pune-based software-services provider last week.

Gurnani, 50, has vowed to improve corporate governance and ties with customers as Satyam tries to win back business lost to rivals including Infosys Technologies Ltd after a $1 billion fraud. Satyam shares have rallied 64 per cent since Tech Mahindra won control at an auction in April.

“The most important thing is to reassure clients that the continuity of business will not be lost,” Rajesh Balasubramanian, analyst at Chennai-based Spark Capital Advisors Pvt said. “He needs to convince them that he has the balance sheet capacity for Satyam to pay the salaries.”

Retaining customers
Gurnani, a former chief operating officer and founder of the Indian unit of Perot Systems Inc, has to reassure customers Satyam is a supplier they can rely on, especially given the current global recession, Balasubramanian said.

“This challenge has been partly addressed by the takeover but we still keep hearing stories about Satyam losing clients,” he said. “If the world were a very hunky-dory place they might be able to pull it off, but with everybody cutting budgets, Satyam may be at the losing end.”

Satyam lost contracts from about 46 customers to rivals such as International Business Machines Corp and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. Applied Materials Inc, Nissan Motor Co, Sony Corp and Telstra Corp are among companies that have moved or are in the process of seeking other vendors, the newspaper report had said.

Software needed to spread Love, Peace and Harmony

I have been writing on Software and Information Technology for quite a some time. Ever since I began writing on these, throughout the years, I came across so many events which raised few questions in the back of my mind. I summed up all the events including recent Iran Election protest, WTC 9/11, Iraq war, Afghanistan War, War on Terror, India-Pakistan crisis over Kashmir, Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Social Crisis and many more...then some unknown thing asked me, is there any software which can be used to spread Love, Peace and Harmony on mother earth? I was totally blank. Because the answer was "No".

Today, we all are using technology or interenet or software for what? Most of us, for making money!! Ain't I true? Most of the Software & Technology companies build and produce softwares and IT services for what and for whom? They use and build technology to sell and to make money!! Customers purchase those, for what? To use them to make money?? Has any of these ever thought how to use the technology or software to spread Peace, Love and Harmony????

I have few questions for these people / companies. If you the readers can, please pass on to them....I beg....

1. Google - Can you make a search engine, which can provide me the search results on how to spread love, peach and harmony???

2. Microsoft - Can you make Office, where one can only use MS Word to write about love, peace and harmony; can use Excel to calculate only Love, Peace and Harmony, and use Powerpoint to present only love, peace and harmony????

3. IBM, Dell, HP, Mac - Can you make machines which can only be used to compute Love, Peace and Harmony??

4. EA Sports - Can you make games, which can only spread and generate craze in youngsters to spread Love, Peace and Harmony??

5. Facebook, Twitter, Myspace - Can you make a social network in which only those people are accepted who spread and believe in Love, Peace and Harmony???

6. Gmail, Hotmail - Can you only allow people to open the mail account who spread and write emails on Love, Peace and Harmony???

7. Intel, Asus, AMD - Can you invent a chip and chipsets which can only be used to pass on the neutrons and electrons of Love, Peace and Harmony??

8. Apple, Palm, Nokia, Motorola, Blackberry - Can you invent the smart phones which are smart enough to Communicate only Love, Peace and Harmony??

9. Oracle, SQL - Can you provide the Database which can only store the database and queries of Love, Peace and Harmony??

10. Mozilla, IE, Safari, Opera - Can you provide a browsers which can only open web sites which spread Love, Peace and Harmony???

In return, Virgin Media agreed to take steps to reduce piracy on its network, something that other broadband providers have resisted.

The measures could include temporary suspensions of offenders’ Internet connections, the company said.

Google acquires Microsoft OR Microsoft acquires Google

Microsoft acquires Google !!!! or Google acquires Microsoft!!! How does it sound? Breaking News!!! No, it's not. It's just an imagination....But suppose it happens that either of the Technology Giants acquires the other; what will be the scenario?? We will hear something like Mingle or Googsoft....:)

Looking at the current developments and ongoing competition which is being tougher day by day; both Microsoft and Google along with Yahoo racing with each other like anything to dominate the Internet & Technology world, it seems the day is not too far when either of them will acquire the other.

Yahoo was already on the edge just few months back to get acquired by Microsoft, but then things didn't work well and the deal couldn't take a shape.

However, if we see logically, it will not be too good for the end users or customers if Microsoft or Google acquires each other. Ultimately, there will be a monopoly in the Internet & Technology market resulting end users to suffer cost wise as well as quality wise.

Google and Microsoft both are having big differences in their fundamentals. Both are strong enough to survive in the market for a longer term.

However, my sixth sense is telling me that there will soon be a rise of a New Technology player in the market (No, not Yahoo for sure) which will start dominating both Google and Microsoft and slowly will crash down Microsoft and Google....!!!

It will be really interesting to see how long Google and Microsoft are competing with each other or after the Rise of the New Technology Warrior, will these two join hands in hands. After all, Enemy's Enemy is Friend!!!!
